THE dates for public holidays in East Dunbartonshire for 2024 have been agreed by councillors.

Six dates are fixed as public holidays: New Year’s Day and January 2, Good Friday on March 29, Easter Monday on April 1, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Non-teaching employees at educational establishments will be required to use some of their flexible leave to cover May 6, 24 and 27 as well as September 27 and 30 as schools will be closed.

Anyone affected who wishes to work on these dates will need to submit a request to do so at least three weeks in advance.

Workers not involved in emergency or essential services will be required to take leave on December 27 and 30, which are the Friday and Monday following Christmas. These dates will be treated as normal working day for those required to work.

In agreement with trade unions December 31 has been designated a “day of no work” so anyone required to do so will be granted an additional day off in lieu, which must be used by the end of March 2025, and additional lieu time will also be given to people who would ordinarily work on that date but are not required due to their shift patterns.

For those in job shares the day of no work will be granted to the person due to work that day. This will create an initial discrepancy in favour of one partner but is expected to balance out in the long term.

Employees working in services which operate 365 days a year and never close will also qualify for an additional day in lieu to be used by March 2025.

The dates were confirmed by East Dunbartonshire Council’s Audit and Risk Management committee.
