A MAN has hit out after a road has been left flooded for more than a month due to two blocked drains.

Bill Beckett says part of Croftspar Drive in Springboig has been flooded with water spreading over the pavements during periods of heavy rainfall.

Bill says the issue has been ongoing for a few years but has been particularly bad over the last five weeks.

He told the Glasgow Times: "There are two blocked drains, one at each end of the street.

"They’ve been reported a few times but on this occasion, it’s the worst it’s ever been."

While Bill, 64, resides in the city centre, his mum lives in Croftspar Drive and he visits her weekly.

He says he is concerned if the drains are not dealt with the water could end up flooding homes.

Glasgow Times:

He said: "If it’s not seen to and this continues the water will spread over the pathway and into the houses which is a concern.

"It will block pedestrians getting access to other nearby streets and it could cause damage to vehicles going through deep water."

Bill says he initially contacted the council about the flooding around five weeks ago and again two weeks later at the end of March.

He says on the first occasion he was told someone would be attending and when he followed up he was told it had been referred to the standby crew due to the water affecting two public footpaths.

However, Bill says the council is still to attend.

Glasgow Times:

He said: "I don’t know why the council haven’t come out and tried to clear them, there has to be something blocking them somewhere.

"They need to get someone out there or we’re going to have this scenario all the time."

He added: "I’m really disappointed in Glasgow City Council."

Labour councillor for the East Centre ward, Kieran Turner, says he has asked the council for an update but has highlighted issues such as this will continue to arise due to cuts to council budgets.

He said: "Mr Beckett has raised an issue that is sadly all too common across our city just now.

"I have asked council officers for an urgent update on this particular case.

"Council teams work hard across the city but this is sadly what happens when council budgets are cut year on year by the Scottish Government.

"Only in February the council had to agree a further £107 million of budget cuts over three years and until the Scottish Government gives the council a proper funding settlement these situations are going to arise."

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: "We are investigating gullies at this location and will take any action as appropriate.

"Our rolling gully programme cleans and empties all of the city’s gullies based on neighbourhood routes, arterial routes and routes where flooding is known to occur."
