A bowling club in Kirkintilloch has received a £14,000 makeover.

Woodilee Bowling Club, founded in 1911, was remodelled thanks to Persimmon West Scotland and Sanctuary Scotland.

Originally located on the historical grounds of Woodilee Hospital, the club relocated to an outdoor facility in Merkland through the East Dunbartonshire Council's assistance following the closure of the hospital in 1999.

The club bought over the building in Merkland from the council in 2021 and turned their attention to refurbishing the clubhouse.

Persimmon West Scotland, the homebuilder involved in developing new homes on the former hospital site, and Sanctuary Scotland, a local housing association, together granted a £14,000 donation, starting the much-needed renovation project.

The donation was delivered under a local community contribution tied with Persimmon's Kelvin Gait development.

The clubhouse now has new shutters, doors, and fixtures.

David Munro, president of Woodilee Bowling Club, said: “The Woodilee Bowling Club is grateful to Persimmon Homes West Scotland and Sanctuary for their generous donation.

“Their support has improved our club by enhancing facilities, expanding programs, and connecting a broader audience."

Chris Logan, managing director of Persimmon West Scotland, said: "We were delighted to support the transformation of Woodilee Bowling Club’s facilities.

"We’re committed to working with valued partners like Sanctuary Scotland to leave a positive legacy in the areas we operate in and I hope the improvements to the clubhouse will make a big difference to local members.”

Gillian Lavety, development director for Scotland at Sanctuary, said: “As well as delivering good-quality new affordable homes, we’re committed to investing in communities and making a positive difference for local people."
