A Glasgow tennis club is using the power of sport for the greater good this week.

Drumchapel Tennis Club will be hosting a charity tennis tournament on Sunday, January 29 to raise funds and stock for Drumchapel Foodbank.

Attendees are being asked to bring tinned goods and toiletries with them instead of paying an entrance fee, and players in the competition will pay to play, with all funds going to the foodbank.

Glynis McNeil, part of the Drumchapel Tennis Club social committee, said: "We thought we would put this on to help out our local foodbank.

"We are in a cost of living crisis and for a lot of people, January is already a bad month after Christmas and such.

"We just think with the current climate, people are really struggling and we just felt we could do this.

"This seems to be a good time to donate and help out."

The tournament will kick off at 12pm and will see four games of mixed doubles.

The competition will be at the club on Garscadden Road and is set to go on until around 5pm.

Members of the club will be playing, and non-members are also invited to join to participate.

Glynis added that although it is a difficult time for everyone right now, every little helps.

She said: "Not everyone can afford to donate, but even if people can give a couple of tins it will all help."

The club, as well as coach Martin Sangster who is organising the tournament, are thrilled for the upcoming event.

Glynis said: "We’re looking forward to the day, it should be really good fun.

"There will be all different kinds of abilities and it doesn’t matter if someone isn't a strong player or not, everyone can join in and just have fun."

The club is known for hosting tournaments every month.

However, though not all of them are fundraisers, the club have previously held the events to raise funds for men's mental health charities, as well as others.

Sunday will see the club's first fundraiser for the Drumchapel Foodbank, and will be Australian themed given the ongoing Australian Open.

Glynis stated that if people wish, they can come in Australian themed outfits to really get into the spirit of the day.

The club are expecting a lot of sign-up and a good reception on the day.
