GLASWEGIANS have voiced their opinions after the latest parking charge hike has come into effect.

As the Glasgow Times reported last month, the council decided to increase parking fees across the city.

Costs in some parts of the city have doubled in the first hour, including in Anderston near the Scottish Event Campus complex, at the Necropolis and in the Kelvingrove area.

The new prices came into effect yesterday and drivers have taken to social media to express their displeasure.

A Hillhead resident said: "I'm seething. More than £20 to park for four hours. They can't even fix the roads and now they are going for extortion."

Another person said: "I think it's disgusting that you have to pay to park where you live, and even the permits cost.

"It should never have been allowed to happen, there should have been demonstrations.

"Absolutely disgusting, what a council."

Glasgow Times:

A third motorist added: "Same in Dennistoun, Barras and Tradeston - how to kill the small businesses trying to trade and pick up again after a tumultuous time."

A fourth person said: "My daughter works in Merchant City, expecting a major hike soon. Absolutely shocking prices."

A fifth Glaswegian added: "Well, there will be no more heading over to the West End, parking in Ashton Lane, grabbing lunch with my family and having a wander around the shops.

"Glasgow City Council is killing businesses."

A council spokesperson said: "New street parking charges came into force on April 2 as part of the council’s budget for 2023/24, which required the council to identify almost £50 million worth of savings to cover a funding gap for this year.

"Any revenue raised will go to support a range of services in the city.”
