A FORMER doctor once jailed for sexually abusing female patients was cleared on Thursday of his latest allegation.

David Baillie, 70, was locked up for six years and nine months after being convicted for a string of indecent assaults at his surgery in Glasgow's Maryhill.

The abuse took place over a 14-year period up until 2000.

Some of his victims were shaved by the doctor and others were explicitly photographed.

Baillie, of Coatbridge, also conducted internal examinations which victims believed were "inappropriate and unnecessary".

His original sentence of nine years from 2002 was reduced in 2006 after a successful appeal.

Baillie was hauled into the dock this week at Glasgow Sheriff Court to stand trial for two indecent assault charges on a now 51-year-old former patient.

Jurors heard the woman provided a urine test after making an emergency appointment with Baillie in 1999.

“He said I was pregnant and I had a kidney and urine infection.”

The woman claimed that the nurse - who had taken the sample - left the room for an unknown reason.

She said: “He told me that he would have to do an internal examination to make sure my pregnancy was okay and I wasn’t going to have a miscarriage. I was pregnant with twins.”

The woman claimed she was not offered a chaperone for the procedure nor explained what he would be doing.

She stated: “I was totally taken aback, I just thought it was inappropriate. I was at the doctors for previous lumps and they didn’t do anything like that.”

The witness recalled an earlier visit to Baillie in 1994 regarding a lump on her breast.

She said Baillie went on to conduct a “thorough examination” on her breasts to make sure there were no other lumps.

She added: “He asked me to sit up on the medical bed and he went behind me and took my bra off.

“He unclipped it.”

Mr Allan asked if he said anything before doing it and the woman replied: “No.”

The woman claimed she was instructed to move her arms while Baillie "stared" at her.

Desmond Cheyne, defending, asked the witness what part of the two examinations did she feel and felt was inappropriate or unacceptable conduct.

She said: “I wasn’t completely sure about the internal examination, I don’t know if that’s what he should have done to make sure the pregnancy was okay but removing the bra is really inappropriate.”

Mr Cheyne made a no case to answer submission at the end of the Crown case.

He stated that there was insufficiency that the acts possessed the indecent qualities required by law.

Sheriff Joan Kerr said: "It is argued on behalf of Mr Baillie that the evidence fell short of what was sufficient to proceed to be considered by you.

"I uphold the submission on behalf of Mr Baillie and he falls to be acquitted of the charge and you have no decision to make."
