A man kicked a stranger in the face so hard that his nose burst.

James Hainey, 32, was walking toward Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre around 3.40am.

He was really intoxicated and with a friend.

A stranger was trying to talk to the pair but they ignored him.

Hainey, of Paisley, then became frustrated and tried to kick the man in the face and body. Then, he grabbed him and pulled him to the ground.

He kicked him in the face, causing his nose to burst.

Hainey then walked off and the police were called. Officers attended and found the man had a burst nose and cuts to his hand.

They traced Hainey to a nearby taxi rank, and he was arrested, cautioned and charged.

He appeared for sentencing last week in front of Sheriff Owen Mullan at Glasgow Sheriff Court after previously pleading guilty to the assault.

His lawyer said: "He advised me that when the witness crossed the road, he had a bottle in his hand. He said it was self-defence.

"Instead of running away, he approached the man. He is 32 years old and he has a daughter from his previous relationship.

"He found work. He has no issues outstanding. He is comfortable where he is living. This is one of the better periods in his life. He would comply with a restriction of liberty order and it would allow him to continue to work."

The sheriff said: "I heard the background information. I understand this wasn’t completely random. You are progressing, I’m content to deal with this matter without custody."

Hainey was placed under a community payback order, which includes 12 months of supervision and 72 hours of unpaid work.

He was also tagged and ordered to stay inside his home every day between 7pm and 7am for 81 days.
