WHO are the heroes in your community, working hard to make Glasgow a brighter, better and greener place to live?
The 10th anniversary Streets Ahead awards, in partnership with Glasgow City Council, People Make Glasgow Greener, City Charitable Trust and City Building, will take place this summer – and we want to hear who you think should win.
The dedicated volunteers behind the restoration of one of the city’s most important landmarks are urging people to get involved.
Friends of Southern Necropolis, run by Colin and Elsie Mackie, have been great supporters of Streets Ahead since we launched in 2011. Our community campaign brings people together to improve streets, gardens, green spaces and parks for all and there’s an added environmental emphasis this year ahead of the climate crisis conference COP26 which comes to Glasgow this winter.
“We are grateful to have been past recipients of a Streets Ahead award,” explains Colin. “The Glasgow Times campaign has given us (and other projects throughout the city) a vital and unique platform on which to help raise our profile. It has helped us promote the ethos of valuing and respecting the educational, environmental, and historical assets of the southside’s very own “city of the dead”. Through our Streets Ahead grant award we were able to purchase equipment and resources and deliver historical educational sessions with local schools.”
