With the sad announcement that Watt Brothers is now entering into administration, The Evening Times has taken a trip down memory lane (or, we should say, Sauchiehall Street) to remember the past lives of one of Glasgow's most famous thoroughfares.

Here is a rare picture of pre-Watt Brothers, which is on the corner of Hope Street and Sauchiehall Street.

Sauchiehall Street has had many rejuvenations over the years, and this picture shows Watt Brothers from 1950s with old fashioned hackney cabs, and Christmas lights hanging up. 

One of the most interesting changes in this picture is the road - Sauchiehall street is now largely pedestrianised.

Here is a different angle of Sauchiehall Street from closer towards the Charing Cross area.

Maybe the pedestrianisation of Suachiehall Street's roads started unofficially! In this picture from the 1960s many shoppers are walking up the main street, including mothers with babies in their prams. The vibrancy of the street is apparent - it was a vein through the city.

This picture was taken in 1975, inside the hairdressers Cut n Dried based in Sauchiehall Street. Wide ties and trousers were all the rage, and so too were carpets - we feel for the poor junior who would be clearing the hair at the end of the day off that floor.

In 1975, Charing Cross was completely redeveloped. Here is a picture from the top of the Mitchell Library looking onto the top of Sauchiehall Street whilst Charing Cross as we know it was being built.

Here is a scene from Dinos restaurant, which unfortuantely is no longer on the street and which operated under the name Ferrari's. The decor is typically 1970s.
