A BATTLE of the bhunas has been launched with Glasgow desperate to win back its Curry Capital of Britain crown.
The city is up against Bradford and both have won the coveted title four times.
But the English curry capital has picked up the accolade for the past four years and Glasgow Lord Provost Sadie Docherty is determined it should return north of the border.
She is now calling on curry lovers to vote for their favourite restaurant with the four with the most nominations going forward to represent the city in the final stage of the competition.
Past Curry Capital of Britain restaurant winners in Glasgow include Mother India on Westminster Terrace, Café, KoolBa on Candleriggs, Mister Singh's India on Elderslie Street and Ashoka Southside on Clarkston Road.
Mrs Docherty said: “I’m urging everyone who loves their curry to join me and give Glasgow their support to make sure we reclaim our rightful position as the country’s top curry city. It’s simple to do and every vote counts.”
The public has until Friday August 14 to nominate their favourite curry restaurant.
The four most popular restaurants will then hold charity events to raise money for the Lord Provost's Malawi Fund.
The Curry Capital of Britain competition is now in its 13th year and involves cities across the United Kingdom vying for the prestigious trophy.
Last year, a total of 76 Glasgow restaurants were nominated with more than 4000 votes cast.
The city won the title in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2010 and was a runner-up in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2012.
Glasgow did not enter last year because of the Commonwealth Games.
The competition was launched to counter bad publicity following racial unrest in parts of London.
Its aim was to provide a showcase for cities with large ethnic communities, through the medium of food.
