BRIAN Anderson's mobile phone rings. Someone at the other end gives him an interesting tip-off.

Before long, Brian finds himself outside a city-centre pub. A familiar figure looms into sight.

It's Pete Doherty, co-frontman of The Libertines, once again one of the hottest bands in Britain.

Brian has a friendly word with Doherty and raises his camera.

And that, in a nutshell, is how Pete came to grace the cover of Glasgow Eyes, a new magazine that details life in the city through Brian’s black-and-white photographs.

It's Glasgow as you've never seen it before.

The monthly magazine aims to cover news, reportage, street music and showbiz, as well as Glasgow life in a hundred different ways.

Brian has photographed crime and showbiz in Glasgow for more than two decades. His thousands of subjects include Amy Winehouse, pub revellers and late-night scenes across the city.

And he only ever shoots in black and white.

He published several digital editions of Glasgow Eyes but this is the first time he has published a magazine.

"All I want to do, really," says Brian, "is to document the city in all its forms.

"The magazine has lots of different kinds of photographs.

"I like taking candid shots of Glaswegians. They might be on a night out, they might find themselves being caught up in a news story,

"The new magazine also has showbiz pictures - there's a feature on a young new group, Alias Kid - they're Alan McGee's latest signings.

"I also managed to get some pictures of TV presenter Denise Van Outen when she paid a visit to the city.

"There are picture essays as well, and lots of pictures of interesting characters."

It was through Brian's extensive network of city contacts - from doormen to publicans - that he learned that Kate Moss's ex, Pete Doherty, was having a pint in McChuills, in the High Street."

Brian has done the magazine single-handedly, from taking the photographs to writing the copy and designing the layout and selling advertisements.

"I'm thrilled with the way it looks and I hope it takes off," said Brian.

"Glasgow is such an amazing city, with people to match.

"I'm a big fan of the fabled picture magazines like Life, and Picture Post, and I wanted to put Glasgow Eyes in that fantastic tradition."

Brian's skill with the candid camera is reflected in a shot of a young Mod couple kissing outside the Classic Grand on Jamaica Street. And elsewhere there are great shots from a Charlie Chaplin lookalike contest held at the Britannia Panopticon venue on the Trongate.

Brian has secured a deal with a leading wholesale distributor to sell his magazine in some 2,000 outlets across Glasgow. It's his hope that future issues will be sold in supermarkets.

The launch issue of Glasgow Eyes is now on sale for an introductory price of just £2.
