A GROUP of kids from one of Glasgow's most deprived areas are receiving private tuition thanks to their local sports club.
Almost 20 youngsters from Provanmill are turning up to the weekly homework sessions at St Roch's juniors football club to learn more about Maths and physics.
The scheme, organised by a St Roch's board members and astrophysics student Michael Docherty, is one of several initiatives being run from the 95-year-old club on Royston Road.
It was also endorsed by maths genius and Countdown star Carol Vorderman on social media.
She tweeted a poster advertising the club when it launched earlier this year, with the message : "This sounds good if you're in Glasgow."
Michael, an undergraduate student at Glasgow university said he wanted to start the club with his colleagues Nick Hall and Paul Naidoo to help young people in the area who had a thirst for knowledge.
Around 18 fifth year pupils who are preparing for their Highers next year attend the class every Tuesday.
He said: "Me and my colleagues from Glasgow University are proud to be able to support the young people from North Glasgow – they have shown a great desire for learning and are a credit to their community and to St Roch’s FC.
"So often people don’t see the positive impact that football clubs can make within their local community and at St Roch’s we embrace the challenge to put the club at the heart of everything positive within the community."
Team Manager Andy Cameron "Michael is doing a great job and the club are happy to support young people in the community.
"In my 9-5 job we help young people to move into training, further education or work and I applaud the club for supporting kids to be all they can be which will make their future that wee bit brighter"
Patrick Donaghey, 17, is one of the youngsters who attends the homework club, and said it gives him motivation to do his work and get the support he needs if he is struggling with anything.
Patrick said: "I realise the importance of getting good grades but homework can be a bit of a chore – the homework club means we can learn from the tutors and each other.
"I am a season ticket holder for St Roch’s and to be honest the opportunity to participate in the Homework Club at the home of the Candy was a big pull for me – on behalf of all of us who attend the homework club I want to thank Michael and St Roch’s FC for their support."
