NIGHTCLUB bosses of a popular haunt in Glasgow's South Side are to make their case for longer opening hours.

The owners of The Shed in Langside Avenue will appear before Glasgow City Council's licensing board on Friday because they want a permanent extension of their operating license.

They want The Shed to be open to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights instead of its current closing time of 2am.

In 2009, the local authority updated its licensing policy which meant any premises outwith the city centre could only stay open till 2am.

A number of special request 3am licenses, however, are granted throughout the year to venues outside the city centre.

The Shed bosses say a move to a 3am licence would bring club closing time in line with nightclubs and bars in both the city centre and parts of the West End.

They also argue it would boost the local night-time economy because many revellers currently go elsewhere in favour of venues which offer a 3am license.

Local residents were also surveyed by bosses at the nightclub and more than 70% said they would visit the venue more often if its license was extended to 3am.

When asked if the reason for going into town was The Shed’s 2am license, almost half of customers said yes. Out of those respondents, more than 90% would opt to stay in the South Side if the venue was granted a 3am license.

If they are successful with their application, the owners of The Shed say they will throw a party at the club on Friday with free entry for all their loyal customers.

The Shed nightclub has been established in Shawlands since 1920 and was formerly known as The Marlborough Ballroom.

Many local businesses have offered their support for the application.

Brian McMahon, Shawlands Business Association Chairman, said: “Shawlands Business Association strongly supports The Shed’s application for a 3am licence. Its venue, culturally and socially, continues to play an extremely important role in the South Side community.

“In terms of future developments, we are currently working in partnership with Glasgow City Council and Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Councils on the redevelopment of Shawlands’ main square. Our aim is to create a vibrant cultural quarter and The Shed - with its many attributes - will be vital to the development and promotion of the area.”
