A Scottish author has scooped his first Amnesty Award for children's books.
Author Ross Collins was awarded the inaugural Amnesty CILIP Honour for his illustrated children's book There’s a Bear on my Chair.
The book is about a bullying bear who won't get off a chair.
Author Ross Collins said: “This really is an honour for me – to have Amnesty International recognise my book is a unique feeling and it makes me very proud. When I talk to children about the book I think the strongest message is how to handle bullies. Every child I’ve talked to understands the scenario of someone taking something of yours and how it feels.”
Nicky Parker, Amnesty's head of publishing and chair of judges said: ‘It might not be immediately obvious, but thinking about how to persuade a bullying bear to get off your chair can teach children about peaceful protest’
Collins visited his old primary school Shawlands Primary School in Glasgow last Thursday to take part in a workshop with children on bullying, protests and standing up for their rights.
