A SPRINGBURN company who charges people to uplift their goods has been slapped with a council fine for fly-tipping.

SM Van Services, who list their address as Young Terrace on their official Facebook page, confirmed they paid the Fixed Penalty Notice to Glasgow City Council.

It is understood the fine came about after the council were alerted to rubbish which was dumped on Cowlairs Road in Springburn.

Medical letters, bank statements and other personal details were lying strewn on the waste ground.

The person that rubbish belonged to had paid SM Van Services for an uplift and that rubbish was subsequently fly-tipped.

Councillor Elaine McDougall, Executive Member for the Environment and Sustainability of Glasgow City Council, said: “The council has issued a Fixed Penalty Notice to a company offering a rubbish uplift service after fly-tipping was found in Cowlairs Road. The firm will also be charged with the cost to the council taxpayer of removing the rubbish.

“Fly-tipping is a persistent problem in the city. It is a blight on our communities and drains our already stretched resources. The sheer audacity of firms which charge customers to dispose of unwanted items then dump them on our streets is outrageous. But the culprits can be assured that they will be pursued and fined.

“We’d like to thank those who reported this issue and urge anyone with similar environmental problems to use new dedicated social media channels to report them to our Environmental Task Force.”

A spokeswoman for SM Van Services said: “I told the council it wasn’t us. I paid the fine to get them off my back.

“My staff assured me that they took the stuff to the dump.

“The council have served me with a notice to clear the rubbish up but I am going to be appealing that because I am not clearing up someone else’s rubbish.”

The spokeswoman of the firm said she has no idea how the rubbish ended up on Cowlairs Road.

She added: “Unless it is proven to me with pictures, then we did not dump it.”
