A LANDFILL site in Glasgow’s East End has been transformed into woodland for all the community to enjoy.
The first phase of Forest Enterprise Scotland’s Greenoakhill has been completed and the part of the site is now accessible to runners, school groups, families, cyclists, and dog walkers to enjoy.
Greenoakhill is a long-term partnership project between Forest Enterprise Scotland, Patersons of Greenoakhill, LandTrust and Central Scotland Green Network Trust, and they will fully restore the 100 hectares of landfill and recycling site into an urban woodland for residents of Baillieston, Broomhouse, Carmyle, Garrowhill, Mount Vernon and Shettleston.
Forest Enterprise Scotland Project Manager for Greenoakhill, Colin Peacock, said: “We’re over the moon to complete this phase of the project, the public can begin to use it as their own community greenspace.
“We have worked tirelessly on this project; new trees have been planted and new paths lain for everyone to enjoy.”
He added: “This is just the first stage of the project completed and we will continue to work on the northern side which will develop fully over next 10 years.
“As landfilling comes to an end, we will work on restoring further areas across the site.”
Greenoakhill woodland area will also create a greenway to Glasgow from the M74.
