The brother of football legend George Best has been found guilty of attacking two neighbours - including punching a woman in the face.

Ian Best, 51, hit Victoria Barker and broke her partner Shaun Berry's ankle with a stomp - causing the bone to break through the skin.

The attack happened after the pair returned from a supermarket to their home in Torquay in Devon.

Best told police the couple were ''obsessed' with him because of his famous sibling and claimed Shaun yelled “'who is your fucking brother?' and went to headbutt him.

But Shaun says he'd never even heard of George Best - and says the incident and injuries have ruined his life.

Best, of Torquay, Devon, was found guilty of inflicting GBH on Shaun Berry on March 1.

Best was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Victoria Barker during the incident on their street.

He has been granted unconditional bail following the trial at Taunton Crown Court and awaits sentence on May 4.

The maximum sentence for GBH s five years in jail, while assault occasioning actual bodily harm also carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment

Best's stepson James Palmer, 24, was found not guilty on two charges of assault.

Speaking after the case, Mr Berry said: "It's turned my life upside down. I've lost my job [as a chef] and now we are so far behind on our rent that we are being evicted.

"It's caused no end of grief for our relationship. My partner ended up in hospital because of the stress.

''The financial problems have pushed us to the brink and I have not had a penny in benefits."

He added: "I grew up in a rough estate - but for him to punch a woman like that. It was pretty horrific.

"I didn't even know who Ian Best was - I don't even like football. I hadn't really heard of George Best."

The court was told Ms Barker phoned police and said: "He broke my partner's ankle and the bone is hanging out - he tried to throw me over a wall. My eyeball is actually bleeding. He is called Ian Best."

Eyewitness Luke Templeton described seeing Best holding a woman by her shoulders before punching her in the face.

Mr Templeton, who lives in a house opposite the incident, said: "I was looking at his back and the woman was facing me - the punch connected and her head went back.

"At that point I thought it would be a good idea if I went out and intervened. I was only in boxer shorts so I didn't want to be outside for too long.

"A man and his son were hurling abuse at the lady - and another man was propped up against the wall screaming out in pain.

"The older man punched the woman - she was trying to get away from him.''

Ms Barker went to Torbay Hospital with a black eye and bruising on her back and neck, the court heard.

When interviewed by police Best claimed he had been acting in self-defence and that Berry had attacked him, trying to headbutt him.
