A SCOTTISH Spice Girls fan hopes to bring an exhibition about the band to Glasgow.
Alan Smith-Allison has joined forces with other collectors and designers from around the world to curate a show that will be held in London this summer.
Alan, who is originally from Houston in Renfrewshire, said: "It’s been amazing to be able to share this passion with others, but above all it has allowed me to create this collection of iconic Spice Girls history.
"#SpiceUpLondon has been a long time in the making, but it has grown beyond even my hopes for it. The interest in the exhibition has been massive and I can’t wait to show off what we are achieving.
"The London exhibition looks set to be the biggest music exhibition ever and it continues to grow with new events and exhibits being added every day.”
The exhibition will showcase thousands of items of memorabilia, alongside hundreds of the fab five’s iconic stage costumes, some of which have not been publicly displayed since they were first worn by the Spice Girls in the 90’s.
In addition to displaying merchandise from around the globe – ranging from the rare and unseen to the peculiar and unusual – the exhibition will highlight how significantly and successfully the Spice Girls went from band to brand on a scale that truly took over the world.
Alan has been a huge fan of the band for decades. He originally started his collection off by snapping up every CD released, but it wasn't until 2008 when his passion turned serious.
Alan said: "Mel B donated items to a charity auction for CLIC Sargent. That's when I thought 'I can own the real costumes'. That's when I got the real bug."
Since then, Alan has scoured different charity sales and eBay auctions to add to his personal collection – which now sits at over 100 costumes and growing.
When living in Cyprus in 2016, Alan shipped his memorabilia over for his first exhibit.
He said: "That gave me full artistic control and it turned out better than what I envisioned.
"I thought 'this is going to work – people will be interested in this'."
Alan then reached out to fellow Spice Girls collectors – including Guinness World Record holder Liz West – with the intention to create the biggest music exhibit.
With its London debut incoming, Alan hopes to bring the show to Scotland.
He said: "When I first thought about an exhibition, I wanted to hold it at Paisley Museum – that's where I wanted to see it.
"I'm now actively seeking a venue in Glasgow. This is home for me."
Mega fans travelling to London have the opportunity to make a day of it and travel to the exhibition in style as #SpiceUpLondon have teamed up with the Big Bus Company to offer a unique two-hour panoramic tour of London.
Leaving and returning from the venue twice daily, fans will be whisked around the city on a special Union Jack-emblazoned open top bus bringing together the iconic landmarks of London and highlighting particular areas of interest for Spice Girls enthusiasts. Featuring a tour guide clued up on all things Spice Girls, fans will feel like they have been transported onto the Spice Bus. And speaking of the Spice Bus itself, in what is sure to be a highlight of the event, the original bus which appeared in the smash hit 1999 blockbuster Spice World: The Movie will be making an extra special appearance, proudly on display as an iconic landmark outside the exhibition.
Alan noted: "We hope to attract old and new fans.
"Children under 12 can get in for free. We want to teach them about the history of the Spice Girls and girl power – it's all about respect.
"This is a tribute to the Spice Girls in a feel-good way. It's going to be lots of fun."
And about the Spice Girls themselves, Alan added: "They've been invited – so we're keeping our fingers crossed."
#SpiceUpLondon – The Spice Girls Exhibition will take place between July 28 and August 30 at the Business Design Centre, Angel Islington, London. For more information and tickets, go to spicegirls-exhibition.com/ticket-sales.
