I KNOW what it’s like to have the honour of captaining Rangers Football Club.
It’s what you dream about, but never believe it’s ever going to happen, and yet I’m one of the few to have been lucky enough to be given this incredible honour.
For the rest of my life I will be extremely proud to say I was captain of my team.
Steven Gerrard also knows a thing or two about leading out the team he always supported.
He’s an iconic captain of Liverpool, and England as well, and that leads me to believe that he isn’t going to throw the armband at just at anyone.
Some managers might not see captain as such as important job. The Rangers manager, however, lived and breathed that role and so when it comes to him picking his new team’s leader, it’s a big decision he w ill have thought long and hard about.
I would imagine these last few weeks have been about Gerrard watching not only how his team can play the game, but it’s also been about getting to know their character as well.
And I’m sure that about now he will have a few players in mind when it comes to naming his skipper.
It’s not an easy job. Being the captain of Rangers is not about leaving the tunnel first and choosing heads or tails before kick-off. If only it was that simple..
For many, you are the public face of the team and as a leader so much more is expected of you.
Take it from a man who knows only too well.
James Tavernier was captain last season for the most part, and I’ll come to what his role might be in a minute, but I fancy Gerrard might want a change.
He could go with one of the new defenders, depending on their personality, which lots of managers do.
But here is a left field idea.
Jordan Rossiter as captain of Rangers might sound a crazy given the chronic injury problems that lad has had over the past two years, but please bear with me.
If, and it’s a pretty big if, the midfielder can get fit and stay fit, I have a feeling that he will be in Gerrard’s thoughts.
Why? Well, the two know each other and Rossiter was captain of the Liverpool under-19 team and I know how highly rated he was down there, but the lad has just had no luck with injuries at all.
What I do know is he’s a player who has a strong mentality, which he’s needed over the past two season, and that is a huge part of that job.
I think it will be fascinating who leads Rangers out in their first game. In fact, I can’t wait for the season to start because I’m as excited as any supporter.
The club have, I think, signed some good players. Gerrard has spoken so many times about wanting his team to be physical and it does appear that he has brought in guys who are not afraid to put in a tackle.
The very thing which was missing last season.
Hey, this is Scottish football. For a team to do well they have to be physical and also fit. It’s been interesting to read Gerrard’s comments about these issue which he has, rightly, addressed.
Rangers weren’t tough enough or fit enough last season. The game which proved this was when a ten-man Celtic showed they were so much fitter by winning at Ibrox.
With a certain Mr Gerrard watching from the directors box.
One player who brings both these attributes is Jon Flannigan who I believe will be a superb signing.
I’m not sure what I can add to everything that has been written about him and his appalling behaviour which took him into court.
All I can say is that while nobody can excuse his actions, he is like everyone else in that he deserves a second chance.
Flannigan has a lot to prove, a lot to make up for, and might turn out to be a gem of a signing.
I can actually see both Flannigan and Tavernier starting, with Tavernier playing in a more forward role.
That would work in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 - there are actually a few alternatives - and while they are both right-backs could compliment one another.
The first match can’t come quickly enough. The signings, on paper, look good and I love the way Gerrard has spoken so far.
But, of course, it’s all about winning. It’s as simple and difficult as that.
There are three domestic trophies up for grabs next season and Rangers must start winning silverware again.
At this club, this is really all that matters.
