A PRIEST was subjected to an attack outside a Catholic church as Scotland’s largest Orange Walk passed by yesterday.
The incident happened outside St Alphonsus’ church on Stevenson Street, near the Barrowland Ballroom, around 4.20pm on Saturday afternoon.
It is alleged the priest was spat at, struck with a baton and showered with verbal abuse, just as people congregated for vigil mass.
According to the Scottish Sun, cops were unable to confirm the circumstances and say they believe the attack was minor in nature.
It is understood the priest himself has not yet reported the attack to police.
Thousands of Orange Lodge marchers flooded the streets this afternoon as the annual Glasgow walk saw several streets blocked off.
Four arrests were made in connection with yesterday’s Orange Walk, however none were connected to the priest’s assault.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland were made aware that a priest at the Barras was assaulted outside his church around 4.20pm this afternoon.
“The parade was passing the church at the time, however the assault was not believed to be carried out by someone taking part. Details have still to be confirmed.
“Enquiries into the assault, which we believe to be minor in nature, are at a very early stage.”
