THE Wee Red Book has been congratulated at Westminster on reaching its 90th anniversary.

The football fans’ encyclopedia of current fixtures and historical facts and figures is out for the coming season.

In a motion at the House of Commons four Glasgow MPs have recognised the publication’s place in the history of Scottish football and the effort of those who compile and sell the Wee Red Book.

Patrick Grady, Alison Thewliss, Chris Stephens and David Linden tabled the Early Day Motion in the Commons this week as the 90th edition went on sale.

The motion states “The Evening Times Wee Red Book has served as a companion and guide for fans of Scottish football since it first appeared in 1928.”

It also congratulates:”The many contributors over the years who have helped compile successive editions, and the street vendors across Glasgow who have sold copies to football fans in all weathers; and wishes everyone associated with this icon of Glasgow and Scotland’s football community all the best for the future.”

Mr Grady, SNP MP for Glasgow North, which includes Firhill, home of Partick Thistle, said: “We all felt such an historic moment for such an iconic publication should be put on the parliamentary record.

“I know it’s well used by football fans across the city, and that includes elected representatives. It’s also doubly-useful for politicians as if we can work out in advance when the big fixtures are, we can take that into account when planning campaign and canvass sessions.”

He added: “I remember as a youngster being fascinated by all the information about club nicknames, record attendances, successful managers, the kind of facts that it’s very useful to remember in pub quizzes years later.
