A GLASGOW school funded directly by the Scottish Government is pushing to increase playing hours on its multi-sports pitch for community use.
Jordanhill School, which receives grant aid directly from Holyrood, has submitted a planning application for new floodlights.
It’s the latest stage of the school’s £220,000 leisure revamp, as bosses attempt to make sport more accessible to pupils and members of the public.
In April this year, the hockey and multi-use pitches were resurfaced as the first part of the project, with work ongoing to raise £50,000 to complete the transformation.
In the planning application, submitted to Glasgow City Council this week, Wendy Grant, the school’s bursar and secretary, said: “We are a school out with the city council and would like to add some floodlighting to our multi-use games area in the coming months.
“This area, which needs floodlights, is a 3G multi-user pitch.
“The area adjacent to the multi-use games area is our hockey pitch and this is already floodlit.
“We wish to add additional lighting units to two already ground-mounted stanchions that overlook both the hockey pitch and the multi-use games area.
“The multi-use games area is already used for sports during school hours and sometimes beyond but not in the evenings as it is currently without appropriate lighting and so too dark.
“With some lighting, we expect the surface to be used more by our sports teams for football, hockey and other active play, and the community in the evenings.”
The floodlights will be mounted on existing pitch columns and connected to the mains wiring. Control gear will also be fitted to existing pillars bolted to the columns.
Funding for the £120,000 pitches was granted to the school, with the Educational Amenities Trust committing £50,000 to the project and parents, teachers and members of the public attempting to raise the last £50,000.
If approved, it is being proposed that the multi-use pitch will be open for community use during the evenings.
Glasgow’s planning bosses are expected to hear the proposals later this year.
