A MAN has been arrested after a woman was raped in the grounds of a church.
Police Scotland confirmed today that a 36-year-old has been arrested and charged with connection with an alleged rape which happened in Stevenston on Monday, July 9.
We previously reported that a 42-year-old was raped in the grounds of St John's Church, Hayocks Road.
Police appealed for witnesses who came to her aid following the serious sexual assault.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police Scotland can confirm a 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged serious sexual assault in Stevenston on Monday, July 9.
"On Monday, July 9, police received a report of a woman being assaulted in the grounds of St John’s Church, Hayocks Road, Stevenston.
"The man is due to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Monday, July 30 and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
