NEW supported accommodation for adults with learning disabilities has been officially opened in Glasgow.
The Esmond Street Advanced Support Service can house up to 22 adults including those with dementia.
Enable Glasgow purchased the former Ronald McDonald House in Esmond Street in Yorkhill, after the children’s hospital closed, and the unit is now full with 30 new jobs in the care sector created.
The charity says better support and healthcare have meant that more people with learning disabilities have a much longer life expectancy.
However there is a shortage of residential places which offer the support they require to live independently.
Theresa Campbell, Head of Supported Living at ENABLE Glasgow, said; “Esmond Street is more than just another care home, it offers older people with learning disabilities a community-based alternative and is tailored to their individual needs.
“The service encourages our users to be active citizens, with the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. We are really looking forward to working with the local community in order to achieve this”.
