THESE dramatic images show dozens of police officers rushing to break up a massive brawl at a popular Glasgow City Centre pub.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, two men were assaulted after the large-scale, street battle following the pre-season friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox on Sunday evening.

Shocking and violent footage of the running battle appeared on social media.

Police rushed to the scene next to Glasgow Central Station at around 6.40pm after fight broke out.

An eyewitness at the scene has now claimed the fight started in The Sir John Moore on Argyle Street, after which it then moved up Hope Street.

The eyewitness told the Evening Times: “There was initially a very large police presence.

“The pub was damaged internally and was closed.

“The issue appears to have been a fight between Rangers football fans and the visiting Wigan Athletic fans.”

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon insisted “there was no trouble” at The Sir John Moore.

He said: “There was trouble around the corner from the pub, but not in the pub itself.

“The pub was closed for 30 minutes as police dealt with the situation and ushered the football fans towards the train station.

“This was to assist the police and also make sure nothing spilled into our pub.

“We reopened once the police had moved everyone on and continued to trade as normal without incident.” 

Police Scotland said on Monday it would liaise with British Transport Police to investigate the incident.

A force spokeswoman said: “We were called about 6.40pm to a large-scale disturbance outside Glasgow Central Station on Hope Street, near to Argyle Street, as a result of which two men were assaulted and received medical treatment for what is believed to be minor injuries.

“Enquiries are continuing.”
