Officers investigating a fire at a derelict Glasgow hospital are searching for information.

Firefighters are continuing to battle the fire at the old Stobhill Hospital on Balornock Road which has been ongoing for over twelve hours.

Investigators have warned that the flames could have spread on to the working hospital had emergency services not intervened on time.

There were no reports of any injuries and nobody was required to be evacuated after the fire broke out around 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Glasgow Times:

Local councillor Paul Sweeney said the fire appears to have affected the old x-ray department and a link corridor.

He added: "There are four category B listed buildings on the site dating from c.1904: the clock tower, the superintendent's house, the administration block and the mortuary.

"I wrote to NHS GGC before I was elected and they said their intention was to demolish all unlisted buildings on the site.

"I think this is short-sighted. The wards and former church could be converted to residential use. I'll be seeking a meeting to discuss the plans for the site."

Detective Inspector Craig McPhail, Maryhill Police Office, said: “Any fire is dangerous, and the incident last night at the derelict building at Stobhill Hospital had the potential to affect the working hospital on the same grounds.

"Thankfully nobody was inside the derelict building and no neighbouring buildings needed to be evacuated.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue managed to get the fire under control quickly and it has now been extinguished. We will now work alongside them to establish exactly what has happened.

Glasgow Times:

“We are appealing for anyone who has any information regarding the fire, or anyone who was in the area last night as the fire started to come forward and contact us. You may have information that can help.

"Anyone with information should contact Police via 101, quoting incident number 3003 of Tuesday 31 July 2018."

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said there has been no impact at the new Stobhill Hospital following the fire.

They added: "The hospital is fully operational this morning and patients will continue to be seen and treated.

"There are some temporary parking restrictions as the Fire Service remain on site to ensure the building is safe and all pockets of fire have been fully extinguished.

"Parking attendants are on site directing staff, patients and visitors to the available parking spaces but we are asking people, where possible, to use public transport while these restrictions are in place.

"The decommissioned buildings on the old Stobhill part of the site have been prioritised for a phased demolition programme.

"Unfortunately the buildings have been targeted on a number of occasions by local youths who have caused sustained damage.

"We have been working closely with Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on how we protect these buildings from further damage and fire until the buildings are demolished.

"We have taken a range of measures including strengthening fencing and increasing manned security which is on site 24/7.

"We have also increased our CCTV detection across the campus to allow us to respond immediately to any potential issues."
