SAUCHIEHALL Street will reopen to the pedestrians tonight for first time since the Victoria's Nightclub blaze ripped through the popular shopping district.

Glasgow City Council confirmed to the Evening Times demolition works on the former club will conclude today and the street will open again this evening.

Renfield Lane will also reopen although some service reconnection work on the street will continue.

The move comes a week after Renfield Street was fully reopened since the since the devastating fire on March 22.

A spokesman said: “From this evening Sauchiehall Street between Renfield Street and Hope Street will reopen to pedestrians.

"While some work on service reconnection on the street will continue, the council will leave the demolition site today.

"Renfield Lane will also reopen to pedestrians later today.”

A small raised area in the centre of the precinct will remain fenced off to allow dressing and repairs.

Dozens of businesses have been closed since the blaze, such as the popular Lauder's pub.

It is not yet known when businesses will begin to reopen.

Meanwhile, further up the street remains in chaos following the Glasgow School of Art fire just, which broke out just three months later.
