Spectators have questioned the decision to place the grandstand at a Glasgow European Championships rowing event behind a rather large tree.

The event at Strathclyde Park saw a stand placed on the waters edge but sport fans were left confused by the choice of positioning as the view from a section of the seating was blocked.

And several took to social media to mock the positioning of the stand and question the motives behind its location.

One Twitter user joked: "Was that tree there when we started this build?"

Another added: "Watching the rowing from Strathclyde Park, nearly choked on my soup when I saw the grandstand built behind a tree."

Even four-time Olympic Rowing champion Sir Matthew Pinsent joined in the teasing, writing: “Can’t help but feel that the grandstand could have been positioned a little better for the rowing.”

And then later joking: "The crew in green has won, the branch has come second and the leaf I think got the bronze in a photo with the trunk."

One sport fan said that there really wasn't much of a problem thanks to a big screen, great commentating and other available seating.

Championships director Colin Hartley told BBC Scotland: "Seats have been allocated to avoid the restricted view, in a carefully planned process."

He added: "We are delighted that this handsome tree has come to the attention of Olympic legend Matthew Pinsent.
