HUNDREDS of Glasgow commuters were left stranded as the city’s transport system descended into chaos yesterday.
Almost 100 roads were closed to accommodate the European Championships cycling trials, prompting calls from Glasgow 2018 bosses for workers to leave the car at home.
However, yesterday afternoon dozens of trains were cancelled after a signalling fault at Yoker train station which caused severe disruption on the rails.
Network Rail engineers tried to resolve the issue but the backlog of delayed and cancelled services meant it took hours for a normal timetable to resume, with dozens of services still not running as normal at 9pm.
A bus replacement system was put in place but commuters dubbed it “useless” given the extent of road closures.
One wrote: “Great, so trains are off on same day as roads are closed.
“Great timing. Trying to get from Coatbridge to Edinburgh but all trains coming up as cancelled! What now?”
Another added: “So the one day everyone around Bearsden and Milngavie is told to use the train because of the cycling.....and all the trains to Milngavie are cancelled. You couldn’t make it up.”
The vast majority of the roads also reopened around 6pm, however, angry commuters hit out at the lack of consideration for drivers, with many claiming they had been stuck in traffic for up to two hours trying to get in and around the city.
ScotRail apologised and offered returns refunds for those who had lengthy delays.
