THE redevelopment of Govanhill Baths has taken a step forward with the appointment of a new project director.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust has announced that David Cook, of Cook Creative Limited, will oversee the next stage in the revamp of the B-listed building.

Dr Susan O'Connor of the Prince’s Regeneration Trust had managed the project to this stage.

David said: “Govanhill Baths is one of the best examples in Scotland of genuine community-led development in action.

"I am delighted to become Project Director for the first major phase of capital works for the Baths, and help create an even better building for the local community.

"I am particularly conscious of the social mission of the Trust and the ethos of openness nurtured over many years.

"I and all involved will work hard to maintain this ethos as we conserve and develop the Baths."

The next step, dubbed Phase1b Capital Development, is scheduled to begin in early 2019.

David will manage the project design team, led by architects Hall Black and Douglas in what is a £6.7 million project.

It aims to conserve Glasgow's most complete Edwardian municipal bath house and steamie.

Niall Murphy, chairman of Trustees of Govanhill Baths Community Trust, added: “The Trust is delighted that David Cook, with his considerable experience in complex refurbishments of historic buildings, has come onboard as Project Director for the first major phase of capital works to Govanhill Baths.

"Working with our funders, we are now keen to get on and deliver our project which both conserves Glasgow's best-loved and most complete Edwardian municipal bath house and steamie and re-opens the building as a wellbeing centre, so it once again resumes its role at the heart of Govanhill’s community.”

David Cook takes over from Dr Susan O'Connor of the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, who managed the project to this stage.
