Locals have complained about being left in the dark over an incident at Silverburn shopping centre which left six people in hospital.

Shoppers were evacuated from the Pollok mall on Wednesday afternoon after several people reported feeling unwell.

The building and nearby roads were placed on lockdown while 46 people were treated by paramedics and another six were taken to hospital.

It is believed that paint fumes being circulated through the building’s ventilation system were responsible for causing customers to experience ‘coughing fits’.

The shopping centre was open as usual on Thursday after ‘extensive’ air quality tests carried out by the emergency services came back as clear.

A spokesman for Silverburn confirmed that an ‘internal investigation’ is being carried out but could not comment further.

Local groups have said the lack of information is causing concern for people living in the area.

A spokeswoman for the Crookston and Pollok community group said: “Some people believe it was paint fumes, and people have already said they don’t believe it.

“I understand there’s commercial paints etc but there’s so much hearsay going about the incident.

“The emergency services dealt with issue very well and thankful to them however there’s still lots of questions.

“We find the whole thing really bizarre to be honest and don’t think anyone is taking ownership of what actually happened and letting us in area know.”

Silverburn shopping centre last posted on social media stating: "The safety of our customers and staff is always our number one priority.

"Extensive air quality tests were carried out by the emergency services and have come back clear.

"We want to thank everyone for their patience."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service commented: “We received a call at 12.43pm on Wednesday August 22 to attend an incident at Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

“We dispatched our special operations team, four ambulances, two managers, Patient Transport resources, three paramedic response units and our Emergency Medical Retrieval Service team to the scene.

“Two patients were transported to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and four patients were transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A further 46 people were treated and discharged at the scene.”
