Train distruptions which have caused chaos to services between Glasgow and Ayrshire are set to continue into next month.

Due to an unsafe building in Ayr, Scotrail has been forced to cancel dozens of trains and alter several others across the central belt.

Services between Ayr and Glasgow are operating with a reduced number of carriages, while some have been cancelled all together.

The operators have now confirmed that this disruption is expected to continue until the end of September.

In a statement Scotrail said: "We've been advised by South Ayrshire Council that an exclusion zone has been imposed at Ayr station, which will have an impact on our services.

"This is because the old hotel building next to the station has been deemed unsafe. We are sorry to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this situation which is outwith our control. We are working hard to get people where they need to be.

"We have Rail Replacement standby coaches at Ayr, Kilwinning, Johnstone and Glasgow Central that will be used if needed.

"Services between Ayr and Glasgow Central will have reduced capacity because of the restrictions that have been applied by the council, as the platforms at Ayr station can only accommodate four-carriage trains. A number of early morning services will also be subject to cancellation."

Disruption is currently expected until 11.59pm on September 24.

On top of this, the train operators are also encouraging those heading to the major Air Show event in Ayr at the weekend, to avoid using the trains completely.

They added: "We will do everything we can to get people to Ayr station, but our original plans for extra carriages arent possible now because of the restrictions put in place by South Ayrshire Council.

"People travelling to the Air Show are advised to make alternative travel arrangements where they can."
