A FUNDRAISING campaign has been set up by an East End school whose play area was destroyed by heartless vandals.

St Rose of Lima Primary School in Mossvale Road, Craigend hope to raise £5,000 to develop their play area.

Their fundraising campaign comes after The Evening Times reported that a toy box was set on fire and items were urinated on around the outdoor area of the school.

Teachers returning for the new term made the shock discovery and hit out at those responsible.

A JustGiving page set up by the school reads: "Our school provided our most vulnerable children with access to a sensory garden. In August, vandals set fire to this area, meaning children cannot fully access this area in a safe and enjoyable way. We aim to raise money to restore and enhance our beautiful sensory garden.

"In addition we have large sections of our main playground terrain which are inaccessible to the children due to safety reasons. We hope to develop these areas to allow the children to have fun and play in a stimulating environment."

St Rose of Lima Primary School has a roll of around 500 pupils, and the sensory garden provided a safe haven to some of them.
