CALLOUS thugs have attacked a war memorial in Glasgow's East End.
A local campaign, led by local resident Jim Watson, raised £17,000 to build a war memorial for Dennistoun's war dead.
But Jim was horrified to learn the memorial had been attacked overnight with what he described as a 'petrol bomb'.
This morning police were at the scene, where a smashed glass bottle, burnt paper and the remnants of a fire could be seen.
The Evening Times first revealed Jim's plans to ensure the community's war dead were commemorated.
He initially aimed to raise £10,000 but donations flooded in and £17,000 was raised.
The memorial was designed by a pupil from local St Denis' Primary School and is due to be unveiled on September 29.
A blue tarpaulin covering the memorial while it is under development has been completely melted.
And there are scorch marks left all over the stone tribute.
Crime scene officers are currently gathering evidence at the memorial, which sits in Alexandra Park.
