THE family of a “beautiful, precious and funny” five-year-old girl who died suddenly have told of their continuing devastation as the tenth anniversary of her death approaches.

Enya Doohan, from Clarkston, died on September 18, 2008, three days after becoming unwell at Our Lady of the Missions School in Thornliebank where she was in primary two.

Scans showed fluid on her brain and lungs but doctors are not clear what caused her death, which devastated the local community as well as her parents Marie and Kevin and Enya's sisters Ciera and Niamh, who were ten and seven at the time.

Her funeral service was led by Bishop Philip Tartaglia, who is now Archbishop of Glasgow.

In the 10 years since she passed away, Enya's family and friends have raised £70,131 for life-saving equipment at the neurosurgical unit, which is now based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Their fundraising effort has including taking part in the Great Scottish Run every year as the ‘Turban Trotters. This ear will be particularly poignant on the ten anniversary of Enya's death.

Marie said: “Although it has been 10 years, in some ways it feels like yesterday.

“Enya was a happy, funny, beautiful character. She loved to make people laugh and was always full of fun.”

“Family and friends have been extremely supportive and not a day goes by that we don’t think or talk about our Enya.

“Nothing will bring back our precious Enya to us but doing this helps us and everyone around us and keeps her spirit alive.”

Enya’s grandmother, Peggy O’Donnell, is a former Evening Times Scotswoman of the year. Mrs O’Donnell was honoured by the paper in 1993 for her work for hundreds of elderly people in Govanhill.

Some 30,000 runners are expected to take part in the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run festival which is taking place on September 29 and 30 and includes a

10k and half marathon distance as well as family events.

Both events start in George Square and from there participants are taken on a tour of Glasgow’s finest landmarks as well as crossing over the River Clyde before runners head back for their grandstand finish on Glasgow Green.
