A PAST indiscretion has come back to haunt a Castlemilk man.

Brian McWilliams, 55, was banned from driving in the 1980s. Although legally allowed to drive again, the accused failed to renew his licence and was caught behind the wheel without the proper paperwork in place.

It was around 3pm when police on motorbike patrol spotted the accused driving a blue Vauxhall Corsa. Following checks, it was discovered that the vehicle had no insurance.

The officers set off after the car, but by the time they caught up the accused was no longer in the motor. He was identified and traced nearby.

When apprehended, it was discovered McWilliams was disqualified from driving.

The incident happened on April 2, 2018.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court this week, McWilliams pleaded guilty to driving along Bridgegate whilst disqualified and without insurance.

In defence, McWilliams' lawyer explained that the accused was disqualified from driving in the 1980s and had yet to apply for a new licence. It was acknowledged that he had accumulated several road traffic charges since then.

The defence agent claimed that a relative of McWilliams asked him to pick up the car, accepting: "He should not have done it."

The accused, a stoke survivor who suffers from anxiety, was said to have "learned his lesson".

Sheriff Alayne Swanson disqualified McWilliams from driving for 18 months.

The accused, of Ardencraig Drive, was also fined £405.
