Ambitious plans have been submitted to transform vacant land next to Celtic Park into a music and events venue.

The 1,000-capacity, purpose-built venue would host a range of events including live music, corporate dinners, weddings, fashion shows and food and drink events.

Designs include a two-storey building on land next to 1257 London Road and part of Dalriada Street - near car parks serving Celtic Park football stadium.

The building would be designed to look like a traditional engine shed to reflect Glasgow’s railway heritage and match the neighbouring existing cutting and tunnel of the former Bridgeton to Carmyle branch line of the Caledonian Railway.

In addition, planners want to include covered outdoor seating and five container units to be used by local retailers to provide ‘food or retail outlets which are not readily available in the east end’.

A design statement for the build adds: “This project will ensure that the East End of Glasgow will catch up with the rest of the city to offer this distinct community the same type of event space which is already widely available in the west end and city centre.

“There is a growing demand from the East End of Glasgow, in tandem with its regeneration, to have its own venue for the local community to enjoy and that venue to act as a social hub during the day with the spaces being offered to local groups and organisations for them to utilise.

“Over £300m has been spent in this part of the East End including the Emirates Arena and housing developments locally. A further 20,000 homes and commercial developments are planned and the scale of all these developments will be such that there will certainly be a need for community serving projects such as the proposals in this application.

“At present the facilities at the Emirates Arena would be greatly enhanced with this ‘G40’ proposal and that, plus future expansion in the area, fully justifies the application.”

The application is due to go before Glasgow City Council planners.
