Another march, which was re-routed away from the east end church where a priest was allegedly attacked, has been cancelled.

The Rising Star of Bridgeton Royal Black Preceptory was due to march on Saturday from Bridgeton Cross to George Square to lay a wreath at the cenotaph.

The council asked for the route to be altered to avoid St Alphonsus Church in London Road but the organisers refused.

It then went to a Processions Committee meeting on Monday this week where the re-routing was imposed after Police said they had concerns about public safety and disorder if the parade was allowed to go past the church.

Police Scotland said while the organisation had marched past the church on several previous occasions with no incident it was concerned there would be protests and the resources needed would be disproportionate to the numbers involved in the parade.

The organisers of the march has now told the council it is withdrawing  the application to march on Saturday.

It is the second parade to be cancelled by a protestant organisation after the council imposed a re-routing order.

Last month the Orange Order cancelled a parade instead of accepting the route the council told it to take.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “On Monday, Public Processions Committee imposed a new route on a proposed march Rising Star of Bridgeton Royal Black Preceptory No. 672, due to take place this Saturday.

“The organiser has now informed the council that it no longer intends to go ahead with the event and the procession has been withdrawn entirely.”

The Evening Times was unable to contact the Royal Black Preceptory for comment.
