A CONMAN has been jailed for driving around with a fake Romanian licence.
Sorin Glogoveteanu, 31, attempted to pass off the bogus paperwork as the real deal when he was pulled over by police on Great Western Road, but his deceit caught up with him when specialist examiners at the DVLA confirmed the licence was fake.
The incident happened on April 16, 2017.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court this week, Glogoveteanu pleaded guilty to driving with a false Romanian licence – and admitted having it for around four years.
In defence, the accused's lawyer accepted: "Either this man is going to prison today or he's not."
The court was told that if the accused was jailed it would have a "devastating impact" on his family.
The lawyer instead asked for a Restriction of Liberty Order which would "considerably restrain him".
He also claimed that the accused's "English is not at all bad". Although Glogoveteanu appeared in the dock with an interpreter, he would not need a translator to undergo a community-based disposal or supervision.
Sheriff Paul Crozier noted that the accused received a Community Payback Order in 2012 for a crime of dishonesty and another in 2013 for fraud.
Sheriff Crozier added: "And here you are now.
"In all the circumstances, there's no appropriate way to deal with you other than send you to prison."
Glogoveteanu, of Corsock Street, was then jailed for a year.
