AN arts centre in Glasgow shut since the second fire at Glasgow School of Art is in “grave danger of closing” according to a Glasgow MSP
Pauline McNeill, Labour MSP, told Nicola Sturgeon the CCA in Sauchiehall Street could shut permanently unless it is given help and allowed to re-open soon.
The venue is still within the safety cordon to the west of the Mackintosh building which is not yet deemed safe
She raised the issue at First Minister’s Questions and asked Ms Sturgeon to ensure the centre gets the £20,000 hardship payment it has not yet received.
Ms McNeill, said: “The CCA has no date for re-opening and still to receive the £20,000.”
She asked if Ms Sturgeon would meet with the CCA and other firms and to ensure the cash is paid."
Ms Sturgeon said: “This is a very important issue for Glasgow and Scotland. I considered it was right to set up the fund for business most affected by the School of Art fire and the earlier fire.”
She said it has taken longer to process the application from the CCA because it received public funding.
The Evening Times reported this week how the CCA is looking at cancelling all events in September.
It was initially given a re-opening date of September 14 but has since been told the risk to the building has not changed and the council is waiting for a report from structural engineers carried out on August 23.
