MURDER cops say a man who was shot several times outside his house was targeted by the gunman.
Gary More, 32, was repeatedly blasted with a gun outside the property in Gartness Drive, Chapelhall, Airdrie last night.
The force said today that they are treating the targeted shooting as murder. A post mortem will, however, be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
The fitness instructor died at the scene despite attempts by emergency services to save his life.
Police Scotland said that specialist officers are supporting the victims’ family through these difficult times.
Murder detectives are, however, now focusing on a small white coloured vehicle is of interest to the investigation.
A similar coloured vehicle was found burnt out near Craigmaddie Road in Balmore in the north of Glasgow.
Extensive forensic examinations are ongoing at the scene of the shooting, and the scene of the burnt out vehicle, to establish if there are any links.
Detective Superintendent Jim Smith of the Major Investigation Team, said: “The victim was outside his house in Gartness Drive when a number of shots were fired at him causing fatal injuries. Although the investigation is at an early stage, it is not believed to be a random attack and at this stage we believe the victim has been targeted by the person responsible.
"I am interested in any sightings of a small white coloured vehicle seen in the street at the time of the shooting. I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of the shooting or the area of the burnt out vehicle, who may have witnessed a small white car or anyone acting suspiciously to get in touch with Police Scotland as a matter of urgency.
“Officers are currently carrying out extensive door-to-door enquiries and gathering and reviewing CCTV footage in the area to trace the movements of the car involved”
Superintendent Louise Skelton added:
“We are aware the local community will be shocked by this incident as it took place in a busy residential area early in the evening. This is being treated as a targeted attack, and we have taken immediate steps by increasing police patrols in the area to provide public reassurance. Anyone with concerns should speak to officers."
Detective Superintendent Smith added: “Extensive police enquiries are continuing today in Gartness Drive and at this time I would urge any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward. Anyone with information that may assist our investigation should contact Airdrie Police Office via 101 quoting reference number 3626 of 6 September 2018. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
