THERE was doggy fashion, duck herding and puppies - so no wonder 10,000 people attended the first Dog Lover Show at the SEC this weekend.

Libby McArthur presented the event while dog fans packed the arena to see everything from Drakes of Hazard to gun dogs and more than 100 exhibitors.

Organisers said they were relieved the weekend went well, particularly following criticism on social media over a ban on people bringing their own dogs.

Robin Chalmers said: “We asked the public to leave their own dogs at home as there is so much going on.

"With up to 5000 footfall expected through each day, if everyone brought their own dogs, that could get pretty stressful for all of our four legged friends.

“When we were designing The Dog Lover Show, we knew that we wanted a really great entertainment element.

"We wanted to educate dog lovers by having vets, groomers and trainers on hand to resolve any concerns that people have about their own dogs.

"The idea behind doing Meet the Breed Clubs, all 30 of them, was also to inform and show the characteristics of the different breeds that are best suited to each dog lovers particular lifestyle."

Event Organiser and Director of Dog Days Day care centre Robin Chalmers added: ”I am completely overwhelmed and utterly delighted with the success of The Show.

"I cannot lie, the relief I feel is overwhelming.

"There is no guarantee with a brand new event. We had a hunch. We took a punt. It's worked out.

"We will definitely be back next year."

Tickets will go on sale in October for next year's event.
