The footballer, 62, will be join speakers including SNP MP Angus MacNeil, and MSPs Sandra White and Alex Neil to share belief that Scotland has earned the right to go it alone.

He told The Daily Record: “I’m feeling frightened and nervous but I’ve always wanted an independent Scotland and feel it’s time to speak out. I’m fine when I’ve got a ball at my feet but I’m more worried when it comes to public speaking.”

McGarvey, who enjoyed a 20-year career as a striker with Celtic, St Mirren and Liverpool in the 70s and 80s, will join 5000 supporters at the rally.

He said everyone in his family voted Yes in the 2014 referendum with the exception of his 87-year-old mum.

He said: "I’ve been lucky enough to achieve all of my dreams on the pitch and I only have one dream left – to see Scotland became independent.

“That would mean everything to me.”

Former socialist MSP and independence campaigner Tommy Sheridan will compere the event on Saturday.

He said: “Frank is very sincere and what he has to say will strike a chord with a lot of people as he speaks from the heart.

“It’s going to be a big moment for him because he spent years too afraid to speak out.”
