Parents and teachers from the school attended by tragic Alesha MacPhail have been left "absolutely gobsmacked" by the amount of money that has been raised to build a memorial in her honour.

Chapleside Primary in Airdrie were left heartbroken when it emerged that the six-year-old's body had been found on the Isle of Bute during summer.

The school's parent council wanted to do something in memory of the "Chapleside Star" so that her schoolmates and teachers would always remember her.

A Crowdfunding page was started in a bid to raise £8,000 to build a wooden playhouse in the playground which "the children will be able to use and think of their special friend".

Almost a week after it was was set up, the school was left with "no words" when they discovered that the page had not only smashed the target but raised an additional £14,290 over and above the inital £8,000.

Glasgow Times:

In a post on the page a representative for the school wrote: "Absolutely gobsmacked! On behalf of Chapelside Primary School and Chapelside Parent Council we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

"I actually have no words right now, the tears are blinding me. THANK YOU SO MUCH."

Alesha was at the start of a summer break visiting family on the island in the Firth of Clyde when she was reported missing on July 2.

Her body was found in woodland and a murder probe was launched, leading to the arrest of a youth two days later.
