A hurricane named Helene, which has battered its way along the east coast of America is said to be now heading for the UK.

Met Office yellow weather warnings have been issued for the now tropical storm Helene, as gusts of up to 80mph are expected in some parts of the country.

The storm is expected to arrive late on Monday on the western part of the country before clearing to the north of Scotland on Tuesday.

A Met Office statement said: "Storm Helene is expected to push north-east towards the UK late Monday, before clearing quickly to the north of Scotland through Tuesday morning.

"There remains large uncertainty in Helene's exact track, however a spell of very strong winds is expected, initially for parts of south-west England and west Wales, then later south-west Scotland and the south-east of Northern Ireland.

"Winds are likely to gust to 55-65 mph quite widely in the warning area, with possible gusts of 70-80 mph in exposure."

Glasgow will not be hit badly by the storm but will experience heavy rain and high winds.

Some areas of the country have been warned to prepare for the possibility of flying debris, issues with transport, road closures, fallen trees and powercuts which could result in injuries and danger to life.
