Valentine’s Day is often the time to splash the cash on a loved one. A romantic meal out at a fancy restaurant is often the best way to show somebody that, even if you don’t love them, you’re prepared to spend a medium to large sum of money on them.
Today, cheapskates can rejoice as M&S have finally released their Valentine’s meal deal – meaning you and your partner (or just yourself if you’re feeling sad and hungry) can prove to each other that the spark’s still there.
But Marks & Spencer are not the only deals on the market – Glasgow’s supermarkets are fighting a turf war over who can deliver the best, and cheapest, Valentine’s day cop-out. Let’s look what’s on offer:
Marks & Spencer - £20
M&S boldly promises “restaurant-quality food from the comfort of customers own homes.”
But the choice is pretty impressive, with a £20 deal including a main course, starter, side, dessert, a bottle of fizz and chocolates.
There’s also a vegan option included in the deal, if that’s your thing.
Mains include seabass fillets, rump stakes with peppercorn sauce and vegan mushroom stroganoff.
Waitrose - £20
If you want to seem posh, or even are posh, then Waitrose has always been the supermarket of choice.
For those wanting to convince their significant other that they are ‘classy but thrifty’ then you’re in luck, as you get a starter, main, two sides and dessert and a bottle of wine or fizz or a box of chocolates for £20.
They also offer Venison steaks with chocolate butter which we call all agree is very, very fancy.
Tesco - £20
Tesco is a good middle-of-the-road Valentine’s deal - any starter, two mains, any side, any dessert, a box of chocolates and a bottle of bubbly for £20.
Decent value, decent choice that, even if it doesn’t blow your partner away, may convince them to stick around.
Chicken in Champagne, Lobster Mac Cheese, and Salted Caramel and Belgian Chocolate Profiteroles are some of the stand-out dishes that, at the very least, sound fancy.
Lidl – from £5
Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a Lidl Valentine’s meal deal.
If you’re a fan of a budget Valentine’s day, and somehow also have a partner, then you’re in luck – this is the cheapest deal going for your bargain hunters.
For only £5 – that’s right – five Scottish pounds – you can have a romantic meal at home, you lucky things.
Although it’s a bit more of a mix and match job than other offers, the food and wine selection is broad enough that you can really tailor your budget Valentine’s day.
Options such as sourdough pizza with kale only spell one thing – passion.
