JUNE had arrived and I had been given a hot tip to investigate as part of my latest case.
“Fresh, tasteful and exciting are some of the words people are using on the street”, I announced.
“Ah, the exact opposite of your patter then”, the Moll responded, delighted with herself.
Lost for words, I ushered Her Majesty out the door, into the Buick and off we sped towards the South Side.
We pulled up at a little joint across from Queen’s Park called The McMillan Bar and Chop House.
Within minutes we had entered, been taken to a cosy little booth and were diving straight into the menu.
For her starter, the Moll went for the classic prawn cocktail which was served on a toasted breadstick with Mari rose sauce, salad leaves and was topped with paprika. She savoured every bite and was thrilled with the blend of flavours on her plate.
I plumped for the chicken skewers which came served in a peanut marinade and satay sauce with a slice of lime. Again, the flavours of the lime with the marinate and sauce were impressive and the chicken was beautifully tender.
It was a fantastic start to the meal and set us up nicely for our main courses.
Goldilocks went for the open steak sandwich, which was topped with caramelised onion, mushroom and cheese, and came with skinny fries. The meat was cooked to perfection and the blend of the caramelised onion, mushroom and cheese with the bread was mouth-watering.
For my main, I went for the steak frites, served with confit tomato, skinny fries and garlic, and herb butter. The steak was thick and juicy and the butter and tomato added extra flavour to the dish. The skinny fries were moreish and perfectly seasons.
The mains were a huge hit and although filling, were not oversized, meaning there was some space for dessert.
One disappointment was the service, which didn’t really come with a smile. The huge amount of time before the table was cleared in between the main and dessert was also disappointing. And we were left frustrated at the length of time our glasses sat empty because no-one came to ask how the meal was or to ask if we needed anything else.
Despite that, we were glad that we stuck around for pudding. For that course, there was only one winner for us both – the chocolate brownie. Served with caramel sauce and a delicious almond ice-cream, the brownie was rich, chocolatey and very tasty.
Overall, our experience at The McMillan Bar and Chop House was good. There was a family-friendly atmosphere, although the service really let the restaurant down. The food, however, was exceptional and, if the service had been up to scratch, this place would undoubtedly have gotten close to full marks.
