HUNDREDS of people turned out in Glasgow last week for the annual UK Asian Football Championship event to the city. 

More than 200 supporters were at Ibrox Stadium for the event, hosted by SEMSA (Scottish Ethnic Minority Sports Association) hosted the 2019 finals, during which Azaad FC from Wolverhampton won 5-2 win against Coppice from Oldham.

SEMSA partnered with Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life to host the event.

Councillor David McDonald, depute leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “As one of the most diverse cities in the UK, Glasgow is the perfect host for the UK Asian Football Championships. We are so proud of our multi-cultural identity and events such as this, allow us to celebrate our diversity.”

He added: “The event brings together teams from across the UK and promotes positive relationships within the footballing community – as well as retaining this very important area of work on the sporting radar.”

Dilawar Singh, president of SEMSA, said: “This has been going strong for 30 years now. SEMSA promotes sports within the Asian community because there isn’t any organisation that does this. This particular event is about football and bringing Asians into this sport.”

Councillor McDonald remains ‘hopeful’ that a breakthrough of Asian talent will ‘emerge’ in the future.
