East Dunbartonshire Council is proposing changes to the process of admissions and the transfer of pupils from primary to secondary school. 

High occupancy levels of several schools, as well as high demand for places, have motivated the council to introduce a consultation on the changes. 

If a school is oversubscribed, places would first be given to pupils that have siblings at the school then to children with Additional Support Needs then according to distance from the school. 

A school is considered oversubscribed when the number of pupils in the catchment area exceeds available places. 

Public meetings will be held at Bearsden Academy on November 13 and Bishopbriggs Academy on November 25 at 6.30pm to stop the council's proposal.

A statement inviting the public to attend the Bishopbriggs meeting said: "The furthest away children will be redirected out of Bishopbriggs. 

"This could have a huge impact on Balmuildy and Meadowburn pupils, homeowners and our local community."

Changes are also being proposed to all Roman Catholic denominational schools in East Dunbartonshire. 

Additional criteria would apply for application and transfer into denominational schools and priority will be given to children whose parents' agree to an affinity with the religious beliefs of the school. 

The council's consultation document stated: "There needs to be a clear process in place if a school is oversubscribed when places are allocated in April each year. 

"The proposed changes would provide clarity on the Council’s proposed arrangements for admissions to primary and secondary schools within East Dunbartonshire Council.

"There is a requirement for the Council to ensure that children are educated to the development of their personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential."

The consultation is running until December 6 and is available on the council's website. 

If it is approved the changes would be implemented from session 2020/21.
