A MAN who attacked two police officers and made homophobic slurs has avoided jail.

Ryan McCarroll, 25, repeatedly kicked PC Andrew McLaughlin and PC Charlene Blackie last month in Glasgow’s Springburn area.

McCarroll was brought to police attention after annoying people waiting on taxis outside the nearby Orange Halls.

He pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the two police assaults and acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

McCarroll was ordered to do 130 hours of unpaid work and placed under social work supervision for six months by Sheriff Valerie Mays.

Prosecutor Charlene Murphy said: “Police were at the Orange Halls dealing with another incident.

“McCarroll was hassling people outside the Orange Halls who were there waiting on taxis.

“People engaged with him and he appeared drunk and refused to move on.”

Officers continued to ask McCarroll to move and he still refused.

McCarroll said: “Why don’t I just pick up a brick and smash your f***ing car window.”

He was then put under arrest by the officers.

McCarroll attempted to “pull away” when handcuffs were applied to his wrists.

Miss Murphy added: “He continued to tense his arms making it difficult to apply the handcuffs.”

McCarroll refused to sit in the back of the police van and kicked out at the officers.

Miss Murphy said: “He struck PC McLaughlin to his right hand and right leg and kicked PC Blackie to her right hand.

Officers applied straps to McCarroll’s legs to stop further attacks.

McCarroll shouted: “You big f***ing poofy b****** I f***ing dare you to come into this van.”

He continued to shout about “f****ts and lesbians” and further threatened officers with violence.

PC McLaughlin and PC Blackie were not injured in the incident.
